It's fair to say that there's some element of judgment, not to say snobbery, between those who go 'on holiday' and backpackers.

Trekking with a rucksack you tend to become rather dismissive of tourists - failing to see that staying in a hostel rather than a hotel does little to diminish your tourist status. Similarly, attempts to rely on a well deserved break of two weeks, it's too easy to cast derision on rowdy backpackers disturbing the peace on the beach with "Robinson Crusoe" by countries that they are 'finished'.

It probably all from jealousy. Carrying everything with you forever-memorizing train and bus timetables, there are moments when nothing seems as attractive as a suitcase on wheels and air-hotel by bus. Similarly, when the time limit is gone, just carefree, flip-flopped inactive travelers discussing, where they until the next head feels like an absolute submitted.

I say this as someone who has experienced both, I know these prejudices exist. I also know which way that you choose to travel the lure of the open road, opposite the hotel, comfortable bed never leaves you.

My first experience with a "real" vacation was initially bliss. No need to sleep with passport, money and travel documents strapped to my belly - I had a room with a safe in them. There is no need to think about Lonely Planet guide to the cheapest place to eat - the hotel was a 'me to eat twice a day. The best of all, not necessarily the desire for freshly washed clothes - I would have a suitcase packed with enough to change outfits twice a day.

But. It was not long before, whether the traveler in the dusty marketplace cafes have been a better time that they knew what to local websites, I never have a chance to explore. Sitting by the pool with a book to be really boring and the only "challenge" Every day was also to ensure a Tan.

The next vacation seemed the perfect opportunity to get back to my roots of backpacking. However, the wanderlust novelty faded as quickly as scuttling the first cockroach I saw in the darkness of a communal shower.

If you have experienced to travel both ways, neither seems fully satisfying. So, this led me to reinvent my idea of vacation.

Last year I booked a cheap package tour. The first few days were happily spent lounging by the pool. Was told that the local people by buses were "too dangerous" I befriended the concierge, who helped me to the nearest bus station. If doing nothing was boring, I simply packed a shoulder bag and "fled" the marble, air-con comfort of the hotel. My 24-Hour Stint "roughing" it in a nearby town, that I knew had enough itinerants, hostels and bars to provide a broad indication entry was perfect.

I have not yet with a name for this kind of holiday, "suit-packaging" does not quite fit, does not "travel." But at least I discovered what you, in the truest sense of the word, experience the best of both worlds.
