Many of us think travel insurance is a waste of money - until, that is, we have need to use it. Then, we're so grateful we took it out.

But how many of us read the policy wording? This contains very important information which, if ignored, could mean you are at extremely high costs.

It is particularly important to ensure that it meets all the conditions for travel insurance if you have a pre-existing disease. What is it? The exact definition is provided by a company to another, but basically it is a medical condition that was present when you booked the trip, or an insurance policy for which you have in the past few months, to medical advice, were in hospital, investigatory powers had taken drugs or tests.

Many people think that they do not have an existing illness. However, the further question, it may be discovered that they are on medication for asthma, hypertension or high cholesterol. Since these conditions are stable - because the drug - nor is it a chronic, pre-existing conditions.

The importance of ensuring a pre-existing illness, is on an insurance policy is that they can be assessed and, hopefully, under the terms of the policy. This means that if your medical treatment if you are not, that is (directly or indirectly) to a condition, then the associated costs are covered by the insurance.

If you do not have to explain (and written confirmation that they were covering) Claims may be rejected.

One person had a whole series of conditions but only one declared to an insurance company when booking travel insurance. He traveled to America and became seriously ill, but because of the conditions that he has not explained.

The hospital contacted the 24 hour medical assistance line used by the insurers, who confirmed he had a policy. Detailed information is available about the reasons for him not to go to hospital and then checks with the screening service for medical, medical conditions which had been declared and to cover. It quickly came to light that the treatment was necessary for a number of conditions which are not explained. Had they been, the person would have said that are not offered for them, and he would be at risk if he traveled and treatment.

The man went home with a very large medical bill was denied that by the insurer.

Another person had declared his medical conditions, but not to mention that he had experienced atrial fibrillation fibrulation (unsteady heartbeat), since a change in medication. His doctors had told him that he had nothing to worry about as they had changed his medication back and the atrial fibrulation stopped.

When he was on, guess what? He needed hospitalization because of atrial fibrillation fibrulation! So much for his doctors' safety!

His insurer denied his claim. He argued that the heart has been through the change in medication, that it again and his doctors told him not to worry. However, the cause of a disease is not as relevant as the fact that they had existed at all. It was established as part of overall medical situation.

If doctors declare someone fit to travel, they are with a number of criteria. If the insurers consider whether someone on the medical condition (s) within a travel insurance policy, they have a totally different. They are using tables of statistics that determine the likelihood of someone in that situation making a claim. Depending on the amount of the premiums for the policy, they will then decide whether the risk for the insurance. There must be enough money in the "pot" to be able to meet demands.

In another case, a man with previous pancreatitis explained to an insurer, and it was for under the policy. When away, he was ill and in great pain and needed urgent hospital. His demand was met, because he had been declared and accepted.

It is not only the medical costs that insurance would cover. If the person requiring medical treatment has a traveling companion with them, it is very reassuring, if they remain, rather than return home. If we become ill, we can very anxious, even scared, and the company of someone we know is often reassuring.

This can mean additional costs for the hotel while traveling companion and new fares for both, if the person is released from hospital. Sometimes it is necessary for a doctor and / or nurse to submit to the person for whom the hospital. Sometimes it is necessary for the person who will be back in an air ambulance

It is important that if you have any medical condition, explain it to a travel insurance. Let you choose - no risk, making an assessment itself - it costs a lot of money!
