We've all seen it on television - a throng of passengers outside of airport terminal whose flights have been delayed or canceled because there's been a security threat or event. These situations do not only apply to airports though - train and bus stations are equally at risk.

In 2007 in the UK, two men drove a four-wheel drive to an entrance to Glasgow Airport. Their goal was to enter the competition, which was full of people, and death and injury. Airport terminals can be closed by the mere threat of terrorism. For example, someone may be set out in suspicious manner or a bag was left unattended. Closing an airport or terminal causes delay to thousands of people!

We have also seen on the news, such as train stations can be closed because of a security threat. Damn, that unattended bag again! The disorder causes - literally down the line - is incredible.

The worst thing in these situations is the uncertainty. How many of us know the frustration of little or no information given to us, even though our train is delayed for a few minutes? Even when we talk about the cause of the delay, if the expected resumption of normalcy happens, it is often the case, we have no update on the situation. We are left powerless. How long will the event or threat last? Can I still be able to stop my train, bus or flight? If I were stuck here for hours, will be paid for my meals? Will I be put up a hotel? Can I use another plane / bus / train from somewhere else? What about additional costs parked car park, when I am in an airport parking?

This uncertainty makes the frustration over the situation.

Would not it be wonderful if expenses such as re-ticketing, extra parking, accommodation and subsistence costs can be met?

Well, the insurance industry, in Britain at least, this scenario has to recent breaches of security or threats. It's now possible to take out a specialist policy that will reimburse you for costs associated with being delayed because of a security threat or event.

Sometimes I feel insurers can easily "dinosaur" in their reactions to situations, but this time, I think they have a product that could be the frustration of thousands of people.
