There are many misconceptions in relation to travel insurance, and understandably most people are not so good in the details of travel insurance as I am - I can not say I blame them! But many misconceptions in people at risk of spending unnecessary money on areas that could and should apply for their own travel insurance.

So I have some travel mini FAQ to assist those who have doubts, concerns or questions about travel insurance.

Q: What should I do before going abroad?

A: Make sure you have adequate travel insurance and you have the FCO Travel Advice for the countries you visit. Verify you have enough money, and that the passport is up-to-date. Take a photocopy of your passport details and keep in a safe place. Check what vaccinations and visas are required. Note the numbers and addresses of the British embassy and consulate in the country you are traveling to.

Q: Should I get a travel insurance before my vacation?

A: I can be a little biased on this, but yes! It is extremely important that you take adequate travel insurance for short trips or visits to Europe, and necessarily in the countries outside the EU, in which different disease conditions, the frequent and affordable medical care, the more difficult to achieve. It also covers for the cancellation as soon as you book your trip.

If you travel to a country or part of a country against FCO advice, it is unlikely that your insurer would be any claim, however. If the FCO advice change if you have booked a holiday, check the position with the tour operators and travel insurance.

Q: Should I look for single or annual multi trip travel insurance?

A: Only you can answer that in fact - although single trip insurance (general) cheaper, it does exactly what it says and covers you for only one trip. In contrast, several travel insurance will be for the whole year through different breaks, so the choice if you think you're probably that much to travel. You may find that only two trips per year would be the annual multi-trip travel insurance cheaper than the one-way diversity!

Q: What kind of reason for the dismissal is valid, to ensure that the travel insurance?

A: As long as you are within the scope of cover provided by your insurance, you should be entitled to, in most cases. Legitimate reasons for canceling your trip can be an illness or death in the family (as defined in your policy), freak weather suspension travel for 24 hours, theft or damage to your home, a victim of criminal attack are not medically able to travel, is shown on the emergency military duty or jury (depending on the specific terms and conditions of the policy). Similarly, if the hotel or city (for independent travelers) through a visit to suffer a terrorist attack in the days before your trip, you are normally entitled to.

Q: Who pays if I need to go to hospital or overseas are flown back to the UK?

A: If you have adequate travel insurance, the insurance to pay these fees. If this is not the case, the costs for you or your relatives and friends.

Q: Is there a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) are the same as health insurance?

A: No, the free European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) shows that the owner is entitled to reduced or free emergency care only within the EU. You will still travel to ensure you are fully in case of illness or injury. The EHIC card is, however, by reducing your initial expenses before you are on your travel insurance.

Q: Is my pre-existing disease, a major problem?

A: Generally, yes. Check the wording of the policy to ensure that pre-existing diseases. Often they are not, unless you pay an additional premium, and if you do not explain your condition if you travel insurance, you will not be able to access them. As always, the key advice here is to check the policy wording with a fine tooth comb.

Q: How can I find out whether it is safe to travel in a given country?

A: It is strongly recommended that the FCO Travel Advice section of its website (fto.gov.uk). This information is regularly updated and give you sound advice on where and what is not safe to travel (remember, areas officially described as "unsafe" is rarely provided by travel insurance).

Q: Is it safe to travel after a terror attack overseas?

A: Unfortunately, there is no such thing as risk-free ride, and the lack of consultation before traveling in a particular country or territory does not mean that the FCO ensures security in this country or territory.
